Ancient Clans of North Derry Urged to Challenge Windfarm Plans (2026)

The ancient clans of Co. Derry are being called upon to unite against a proposed windfarm development that threatens some of the region's most cherished historical sites. This legal challenge, led by the Save Benbradagh campaign, highlights the complex relationship between renewable energy projects and cultural heritage preservation.

The proposed windfarm at Magheramore, located near Dungiven, has sparked controversy due to its potential impact on several significant historical sites. These include Banagher Old Church, the final resting place of Saint Muiredach O'Heaney, and Benedy Glen, a picturesque spot along the main Belfast-Derry road. The decision to grant planning permission for the six-turbine development by the Planning Appeals Commission has ignited local opposition.

Locals argue that the windfarm will "adversely impact" these historical sites, and they are now taking legal action to challenge the decision. The Save Benbradagh group, led by Shauna McGroarty, emphasizes the area's exceptional beauty and the need to protect it from development. They are calling on the ancient family names of north Derry, such as the Heaneys, O'Kanes, McCloskeys, O'Neills, and Mullans, to join the cause.

However, the project's proponents, RES, argue that the windfarm has been "carefully designed to fit sensitively into the existing landscape." Jennifer McCorry, project manager for RES, welcomes the decision, stating that it "unlocks much-needed investment in the local economy."

The legal challenge is now seeking financial support through a Crowdfunder campaign, known as the "Heart of the Sperrins appeal." This initiative underscores the growing trend of community-led efforts to protect cultural heritage from industrial development. As the legal battle unfolds, it raises important questions about the balance between renewable energy goals and the preservation of Ireland's rich historical and cultural landscape.
